Planting New Roots

When Dave and Amy began to think about expanding their farming operation in Ontario, they quickly realized that opportunities were limited. Determined to grow their farm and create something long-term for their family, they broadened their search, exploring the wide-open possibilities in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

It wasn’t long before they discovered the perfect piece of land in rural Manitoba, a farm that had the potential to support their vision. It came with a house already on the property, which became the perfect home for Dave’s mother, who was eager to join in on the new family adventure.

But Dave and Amy weren’t just looking for land, they were also dreaming of a custom home that would meet their family’s needs and reflect their long-term goals. With Amy’s background in engineering, she designed a home that balanced functionality, comfort, and future-forward planning. The couple reached out to several local builders, but it was Alair Homes that stood out. Their team offered not only the professionalism they were looking for, but also the ability to manage the entire project while the family transitioned provinces. From day one, the relationship with Alair Homes, especially project manager Cody Silvius, was built on trust and shared vision.

The result is a stunning 3,750 square foot bungalow that seamlessly blends thoughtful design with family-oriented living. With four bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms, the home is built to evolve with the family. Wide hallways and doorways, along with a smart layout, ensure the home is accessible and practical for aging in place. It’s not just a home for today, it’s a home for decades to come.

The interior features luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout, chosen for its durability and ease of maintenance, a must for the farm lifestyle. Custom Knotty Alder cabinetry adds warmth and character to the kitchen, while quartz countertops give a clean, modern feel. The hidden pantry, jack and jill bathroom for the kids, and large mudroom reflect the practical needs of a busy household.

Personal touches make the home especially meaningful. Dave and Amy each have their own office spaces, a must for running a business from home. The desktops were crafted from a tree sourced from Ontario, adding a piece of their past to their future. The primary bedroom is a retreat, complete with his and her walk-in closets and a spa-like ensuite. A custom tiled shower, soaker tub, and dual sinks complete the ensuite perfectly. Downstairs, the finished basement offers a games room, theatre space, and a large multi-purpose area for whatever life brings next.

To complete the home, Dave and Amy worked with Budget Blinds of Southwest and Southeast Manitoba. The team, led by Sue, helped them choose solar roller shades for the offices and kitchen, offering excellent heat and glare control without sacrificing the views. When visiting the showroom, Dave and Amy fell in love with the look and versatility of dual or sheer shades (zebra blinds), and now enjoy the ability to transition between privacy and light with ease.

This wasn’t just a move for Dave and Amy, it became a family affair. With Dave’s mother living in the original farmhouse, his sister was inspired to join the Manitoba move as well. She has since built a custom home on a piece of the farm and plays a key role in the daily farm operations. What started as a quest for land turned into the creation of a family hub, built on strong relationships, thoughtful design, and the spirit of working together.

From Ontario roots to Manitoba soil, Dave and Amy have planted something truly lasting.
